The Goderich Salt Company wanted Peter to drill two new salt wells, which would be called the Maitland and Prince, close to the original well in the Maitland Valley. In his letter, Samuel also invited Peter to join his family in Goderich for the July 1 Confederation celebrations.

In Bothwell, the price of oil had dropped and a devastating fire had destroyed many businesses on George and Main Streets. It was time to return to Goderich.
